Some quick notes...these are mainly the result of Winter Break/long layover at the airport. I am, I believe, refining my style. Although there are a lot of people a lot better than me out there, I'm proud that I've come a long way from my rather horrendous very early icons. I also didn't look at any tutorials for these icons--they all came as refinements of earlier techniques I had learned and looking at other people's icons that I liked and deconstructing them and figuring out things on my own. But, of course, I'm going to have to go back to tutorials soon to get better.

Also, some of the HYD icons are part of what I plan to be a complete songset for the song "I Believe You But My Tommy Gun Don't" by Brand New. Which, if you listen to the lyrics (I'll post them with the complete songset) fit the series nearly perfectly. Which is, by the way, a completely awesome series.

Really, really, REALLY should be in bed right now. But I'm not. I made a few icons on the long-ass plane trip, and I'm actually quite proud of them, which is surprising considering that I was feeling not-so-good about my icon making ability after visiting the journals of some really, REALLY talented people. But I guess airplanes bring out the best of me or something. Oh, and in case you hadn't noticed I have fallen in love with gradients. Just a little.

Fruits Basket: #2&3-Tohru is such a bubbly, optimistic character...I like how I chose one of the ONLY angsty shots of her I've seen in the first 13 or so episodes. I think that says something about me... #4-In case you were curious, that white scribble says "bleed"; it was a brush and I thought it looked cool and fit with the icon

Buffy: #2&3: At the time I added the quote, I wasn't sure if it was "weary" or "wary." Both work, though. In case you were wondering, it is actually "wary" (from "Here in my Room" by Incubus--took from buffy_chorus 'cause they've got the best quote ideas for icons)

With the free time on my hands, I've been experimenting with new icon making methods. I've got loads of awesome new brushes (courtesy of such fine folk as dtissagirl and isabellecs) and I've learned more about gradients. Plus, I've learned how to do that cut/paste thing (see icon #2). These aren't my best work, but it's a learning experience.

I am finally receiving requests! Oh, the happiness. So, for the people who submitted the requests (Erin--Gustave, Laurie--Sleeping Beauty) tell me if this is what you want. Do you want a different picture, different text, etc? Happy to change things around. I don't really WANT to do any schoolwork. However, I do honestly have to do SOME homework today. Decided Disney version Sleeping Beauty is not dark enough for that. 2-Thought this might fit request slightly better 3-From "We Looked Like Giants" by Death Cab for Cutie. Kickass song. 4-Loved text for #3, but thought that this looked better on icon (less clutter)

Some notes:

X: 1-My attempt to be clever (thin line between love & hate. get it? get it? that's what happens when you get bored during class and you start dreaming of making icons) 2-It says "Leave you with your misery, a friend that won't betray" it's from a Sarah McLaclan song 4-The Kanoe one is my least favorite because I don't like how the text looks, but I just had to make an icon that says that. If you don't get it, ask Brandon.

Cowboy Bebop: 1-It says "Desperado been out riding fences for way too long" from the song Desperado 3-My personal favorite 4-I hope it's readable, but if it's not, it says "Ever since you learned to walk you ran away" it's from a song quote that I stole from an icon challenge

So...yeah. I am so saddened by my early icons. They stunk. A lot. But I'm getting better! But I'm really slow at making icons still. I made TWO tonight in the span of about 2-3 hours, which is a long time for two fairly basic icons. Anywho, when I get enough icons for a decent batch I'll post them. And I made my first post for my eyes only because it contained my first six or so icons which are just so bad they're depressing. I do not want anyone besides me to see them.

And the icons I entered into contests? Didn't win ANYTHING. They were like some of the only icons not to win anything in the contests. It's easy to see why now. Even though it was some of my best work at that point early on in my icon-making career, they were still really bad compared to most people's. Hopefully the icons I'm so proud of now will stand the test of time. We'll see.

I entered two contests: kinga_chorus and legend_icons. We'll see how it goes. I think it was really some of my better work, but I saw some of the other entries...which were amazing...and a littl beyond my skills. So I won't be sad if I don't even place. No way am I getting 1st or 2nd-maybe 3rd or less if I had an AMAZING stroke of luck. But, this is just to get my icons out there, get some practice, and have fun. And, some day I'll place.

Oh, and can I just say that icon_tutorial and 100x100_brushes are a Godsend? I'd still be stuck without any halfway decent brushes and without a BUNCH of fairly basic techniques that were unknown to me. Thank you, kind people of the internet.

I'll post some new icons this weekend. My two new icons are in the contests, and they can't be posted here until after the contest ends. Not that anyone reads this journal but me, but whatever.
